Pilot Rock is a 5,914-foot volcanic plug in the Klamath/Siskiyou Mountains near Jackson County's border with California. It was an early landmark for explorers. The native Takelma Indians called this formation "Tants'atseniphta" -- "Stone Stand Up." The picture below was taken on a late December 2000 afternoon from half-way up the 7,533-foot summit of nearby Mt. Ashland, Southern Oregon's winter playground.
