Imperial County - The Last County©

Imperial County was the last of California's 58 counties to be formed. Yet for many, it occupies a special place in our hearts, for it is somehow first in many ways.

There is substantial evidence that the European discovery of California probably took place on the Imperial County shores of the Colorado River, rather than the commonly held belief that the San Diego shoreline was the first sight of California by any European. It may also be true that gold mining took place here in the county well before California's Gold Rush of the 19th Century. Parts of the Imperial County story are told in the pages listed below.
